Ben Collard

Year of: 2016

Subjects studied: Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry

What I did after leaving: After leaving Kirk Hallam Sixth Form, I studied maths for 4 years at the University of Manchester. During my time at Manchester, I got the opportunity to work with the landmine detection unit, applying maths to an important real-world problem. I graduated with a first in 2020.

What I am doing now: I have recently started an industry-sponsored PhD at Imperial College London in mechanical engineering and materials science, working on how composite materials can fail.

Advice for current KS5: Study what you find interesting and never be afraid to dive deeper. Independently gaining a deep understanding of a subject is very advantageous and also extremely rewarding.
